Katrina Bajoras starts on canvas, at the scale of a wall, and only then takes the composition down to the floor. That order matters. It is why none of these read as patterns: they have a top and a bottom, a figure and a background, and the kind of imbalance that only comes from a hand rather than a repeat.
The compositions are named after places you walk through. Broadway, Fifth Avenue, Savile Row, Lombard st., the Philosopher's Walk in Kyoto, Ninenzaka, Montsouris in Paris. Then the Baltic coast comes in: Nida, Giria, Pape. A collection about streets, made by someone who grew up near the dunes.
Everything is hand tufted in Europe, one piece at a time, in 100 percent New Zealand wool, hardtwist or lyocell. Nothing is stocked and nothing is printed. Size, palette and shape can all change, including the outline itself.
A rug is a painting that agreed to be walked on.

The large statement pieces, 300 by 200 cm and up. Dense, matte, and heavy enough to anchor a whole room.
Tight, graphic, framed
Twisted yarn holds a sharper edge, so borders and grids stay crisp. Around 100 by 81 cm, strong colour, and tough enough for a doorway. This is where THRESHOLD comes from.
Botanic fibre, silk sheen
Softer and cooler than wool, with a shine that shifts as you move around it. The quiet end of the collection.
Any piece can be made in a custom size, palette or outline. Two of the works below are cut to shape rather than rectangular, which tells you how far this can go.
Not every rug is a rectangle.
